The National Bank opened a branch in Maitland in 1884 but business proved disappointing and it closed in 1886.

In 1906, the branch was reopened in a private house with Mr. A. G. Schroeter as Manager. The site was then purchased for £180 and a building to provide branch premises and residence was erected at a cost of £1,360.

Some alterations took place in 1939 but the building remained the same for 65 years. In 1971 extensive alterations and additions of the original building occurred.

Bank services in Maitland commenced in 1875 with an agency for the Bank of South Australia in the general store, before opening their own branch. The National Bank of Australasia opened its first branch in Maitland in 1884, but as the town was not big enough to support two banks, it closed soon after, and did not reappear for another twenty years.

The bank operated at 51 Robert Street until 28 June 2002, when it became one of 56 branches of the National Australia Bank to close in regional centres that year.

The bank closed in 2002 and the building in now used as a B & B.
