Maitland Butcher

James Harper, one of the first butchers in town, opened here in 1875. Following his death the next year, the business was bought by Mr. C G R Cane, butcher and farmer. John Thomas, bootmaker and saddler of Maitland, had conducted his butchery near the corner of Robert and Samuel Streets. He bought the butchery from Cane in 1895 and moved his business here. In 1908 he built a new shop and residence. John Thomas & Sons traded here until the 1970s. The Maitland butcher is now a family home but still has some artifacts of the old butcher, like a few wooden blocks and some bricks. Other than that, the butcher side of it is long gone, and is now owned by a loving family and a very welcoming home.
